Graduate Specialization

Why Latinx?

People with Latin American heritage are diverse, so naturally different communities and individuals will identify themselves using a range of terms. “Latinx” and “Latine” are currently the most inclusive pan-ethnic terms to use when referring to United States-based people with Latin American roots.

How are Latinx Studies and Latin American Studies different?

The field of Latinx Studies is preceded by Chicano (1969) and Puerto Rican (1973) Studies as a route towards the advancement of these and other marginalized groups of Latin American origin contributing to the U.S. national project. Latinx Studies differs from Latin American Studies in that it deals with U.S. geographical, cultural, and political borders, while Latin American Studies is an academic and research field associated with the study of Latin America.

We offer a minor and a graduate specialization with critical analysis of the experiences, histories, and cultures of the multiethnic, multiracial, and multilingual population of U.S. Latinxs.
