Javier Jasso draws from his clinical experiences as a bilingual speech-language pathologist working with preschool and school-age children and their families to investigate bilingualism in heritage language contexts, particularly in Latinx/a/o communities. The overarching goals of his work are to (a) advance our understanding of bilingual children’s grammatical development; (b) disentangle differences in this development as a function of language ability (i.e., typically developing bilinguals vs. those with developmental language disorder); and (c) better understand the social and linguistic factors that contribute to the quality of care for children from linguistically and racially minoritized communities. This work moves away monolingual-centric theories, epistemologies, and practice patterns that have historically produced deficit framings of bilingual practices.
